Paris Saint-Germain have made a late contract offer to Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum to try and stop him joining Barcelona.
Barça have been chasing the Dutchman for around 12 months now and are deep in negotiations with Wijnaldum in the hope of making him their third free signing of the summer, potentially following Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia in heading to Camp Nou.
A final agreement is yet to be reached, however, allowing a handful of other sides across Europe to throw their hat into the ring.
Bayern Munich have previously been linked with Wijnaldum, while PSG were credited with an interest back in May. Now, ESPN state that the French side have taken things one step further by offering the midfielder a contract.
PSG’s offer is understood to include a mammoth salary which is significantly higher than that offered to him by Barcelona, and now Wijnaldum is leaning towards heading to the Parc des Princes this summer instead.
Sources close to the situation at Barcelona now fear that they may have missed out on one of their top targets, although they will continue to do whatever they can to try and win the race for his signature.
A potential move to Paris for Wijnaldum is nothing new. He had the chance to join back in 2014, when he was still playing for PSV Eindhoven, only to reject their proposal and join Newcastle United 12 months later instead.
Seven years after his first chance to join, it appears as though Wijnaldum is finally ready to take his talents to PSG.
Missing out on Wijnaldum would be a significant blow to Barcelona and manager Ronald Koeman, who pushed for a deal to sign the Liverpool man last summer and has continued to campaign for his signing ever since.
Instead, he looks set to miss out on one of his top targets, with Barcelona’s focus now on getting a deal for Dutch team-mate Memphis Depay over the line.
