Manchester City centre-back Ruben Dias has been named 2020/21 Premier League player of the season, further highlighting his incredible impact in his debut season in English football.
Dias has already been named FWA football of the year and is nominated for PFA players’ player of the year, with this Premier League award putting the Portuguse star on course for a rare clean sweep of the three annual individual gongs.
The Premier League player of the season is decided on a combination of a public fan vote and opinions from an expert panel.
Dias finished ahead of City teammate Kevin De Bruyne, as well as Bruno Fernandes, Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah, Jack Grealish, Mason Mount and Tomas Soucek.
Although Dias became the first defender since Steve Nicol in 1989 to win the FWA prize, centre-backs have typically been more recognised in the Premier League award. Virgil van Dijk won it as recently as 2018/19, while Vincent Kompany won in 2011/12 and Nemanja Vidic was a two-time winner for the 2008/09 and 2010/11 seasons.
He is the second Portuguese player to win the award after Cristiano Ronaldo and is also only the second City player to receive it after the aforementioned Kompany nine years ago.
