Son Heung-min injury latest: Tottenham vs Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min could be in line to make a return to action against Chelsea on Sunday as he steps up his recovery from a calf injury suffered on international duty.

The 29-year-old missed Spurs’ disappointing 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace last weekend, and will not be ready to face Rennes in Thursday’s Europa Conference League clash.

Son wasn’t expected to be fit in time to take on Chelsea in Sunday’s derby either, but journalist Matt Law reports that the South Korean star hasn’t given up hope of completing his recovery ahead of schedule and returning to take on the Blues in north London.

Son picked up the calf injury during a South Korea training session, forcing him to miss their World Cup qualifier against Lebanon. It was unclear how long he would be out of action, with no time period stated in concrete for a possible return.

There were fears he could be set for a significant spell on the sidelines, but the latest news suggests he could be back much sooner than anticipated.

The former Bayer Leverkusen star is a key figure, having scored 22 goals and provided 17 assists in all competitions last season. His connection with striker Harry Kane brings out the best in the England captain, who clearly missed Son at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

Kane didn’t have a single shot or a touch of the ball in the Crystal Palace penalty area, which was the first time in his career he has suffered this frustration having completed the full 90 minutes.
Consequently, Spurs’ 100% winning start to the season came to an end against Patrick Vieira’s side, where they were thumped 3-0 by the Eagles in a dismal showing.

Son’s importance to the team is unquestionable, and the club made sure to secure his services for the future by tying the forward down to a new long-term contract over the summer.

Centre-back Eric Dier could also recover from his own injury issues to face Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium – he came off early against Palace.
