Tottenham have confirmed Toby Alderweireld has joined Qatari side Al-Duhail.

The Belgian has been a superb servant for Spurs since moving to north London in 2015, going on to make 174 Premier League appearances for the club and almost helping them to Champions League success in 2019.

The 32-year-old as understood to have informed Tottenham earlier this summer of his desire to leave the club, and following news of a potential move to Al-Duhail, Spurs have now taken to their official website to confirm a deal has been done.

“We have reached agreement with Al-Duhail SC in Qatar for the transfer of Toby Alderweireld,” a statement read.

“The defender joined us from Atletico Madrid in July, 2015, and formed a strong central partnership with fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen, the pair providing the backbone of our Champions League qualification in 2015/16 and our best defensive record in a Premier League campaign – 26 goals conceded – on our way to second place in 2016/17.

“He started both legs of the quarter-final, semi-final and then the final in our Champions League run of 2018/19.

“Now 32, Toby made 236 appearances in his six years at Spurs. He’s also reached 113 caps for Belgium, playing in the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, and 2016 and 2020 European Championships.
We wish Toby all the best for the future.”

Spurs offered no news with regards to how much they will receive from the sale of Alderweireld, though recent reports have suggested a fee of £13m had been agreed between the two teams.

Newly appointed Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo will now presumably have additional transfer funds at his disposal as he looks to freshen up the squad ahead of next season.

Spurs are understood to be in talks with a number of potential defensive arrivals including Cristian Romero and Takehiro Tomiyasu. 90min understands that Romero has told current club Atalanta that he wants to join Tottenham and is keen for an agreement to be reached as soon as possible.
